Entrance Requirements
Applicants may be admitted to Brazosport College on one of the following conditions:
- Graduation from an accredited high school - Applicants who graduated from a non-accredited high school may be granted qualified admission and, at the discretion of the Director of Admissions & Registrar (or designee), permitted to remove any deficiencies.
- Transfer from another college - Students in good standing at another college may be admitted by transferring credits. However, Brazosport College will not admit students who are on enforced disciplinary withdrawal from another school. Students under scholastic suspension or probation from another institution will be admitted on probation. Brazosport College requires the student to submit an official transcript from each institution attended even if the coursework is listed on another institution’s transcript. The only exception is for students with a bachelor’s degree or higher.
- By examination - Applicants may be admitted upon successful completion of a General Educational Development (GED) Test as certified by a State Education Agency.
- Individual approval - In special circumstances, students who are 18 years of age or older may be admitted through individual approval. Admission by individual approval is limited to the following types of students:
- individuals with work experience who wish to enter a workforce education certificate program
- individuals who have demonstrated appropriate scores on the college placement test
Students must have a recommendation from the appropriate division chair and approval from the Director of Admissions prior to being admitted by individual approval.
Conditional Admission:
Conditional (temporary) admission may be granted to applicants who have not provided all documents required by the census date of their first semester. Students admitted as conditional are considered a regular student. A regular student is someone who is enrolled or accepted for enrollment for the purpose of obtaining a degree or certificate offered by Brazosport College. Students so admitted must supply the required documents before they can enroll in their second semester of study. Once all required documents are received, students will be eligible for enrollment in future semesters. Failure to complete admission requirements before the first day of class of the following semester will result in disciplinary action including, but not limited to, administrative withdrawal with forfeiture of tuition and fees.
Conditionally admitted students are subject to immunization requirements in accordance with Section 51.9192 of the Texas Education Code. Until all required high school or college transcripts are received, conditionally admitted students are not eligible for Title IV federal financial aid.
Transient (Visiting) Students:
You are considered a Transient (Visiting) student if you are attending another institution of higher education but wish to enroll in courses during Summer (or a special session such as Fall-Mini or Spring-Mini) at Brazosport College on a temporary basis as non-degree seeker with the intent of returning to your home institution. Transfer coursework is only evaluated for degree-seeking students. Meet with an academic advisor at your home institution to ensure the course you are interested in taking will transfer and is needed for your degree plan.
You are considered a Visiting student if you wish to enroll in a course for the purpose of taking pre-requisite courses and not seeking a degree at Brazosport College, or if you already earned a degree at Brazosport College and want to take courses for personal enrichment purposes or to improve a grade.
Transient (Visiting) students are not eligible for Financial Aid at Brazosport College. Please check with your home institution regarding financial aid eligibility.
Transient students are allowed to register at any time after they have been admitted, once registration for the term is available
Transient (Visiting) admitted students are subject to immunization requirements in accordance with Section 51.9192 of the Texas Education Code
Immunization
Beginning with the spring 2012 semester, Section 51.9192 of the Texas Education Code requires all students entering an institution of higher education to provide proof of receiving a bacterial meningitis vaccination received within 5 years of the date in which they apply to the institution. Proof of vaccination must be received by the Office of Admissions no later than 10 days prior to the published start of courses for a particular academic semester. Students who do not provide proof of bacterial meningitis vaccination by the established deadline could be removed from courses.
Section 51.9192 of the Texas Education Code provides exemptions from this requirement for students who are over 22 years of age, students currently attending an institution of higher learning, or students attending courses only online. If an online student enrolls in an on-campus section of any course, they become subject to the established rule and must provide proof of bacterial meningitis vaccination within the previous 5 years at least 10 days prior to the start of that semester’s published start date. Current students become subject to the rule should they have a break in enrollment of at least one fall or spring semester.
Sections 2.09 and 2.09a of the Texas Education Code emphasize the importance of students maintaining their immunizations.
Course Placement: Texas Success Initiative Assessment 2.0 (TSIA2) Testing
Brazosport College is an open-admission institution; however, students must demonstrate appropriate English/Language Arts (reading and writing) and Mathematics skills on examinations approved by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board before registering for most college transfer courses and some workforce education courses.
The Texas State Education Code requires all students who enter public institutions of higher learning to be assessed for English/Language Arts (reading and writing) and Mathematics skills before enrolling in academic classes. Brazosport College administers the TSIA2 exam to assess these skills. A college level score on these exams is not required for admission to the college; however, students must satisfy all sections of the TSIA2 exam before enrolling in college-level courses which would bring their total completed college-level semester credit hours to 60 hours or more.
Students who do not make a college level score on any part of the TSIA2 exam will be required to enroll in transitional education courses until they demonstrate the required skills or demonstrate college readiness on section(s) of the TSIA2 exam. All degree-seeking students must take the TSIA2 exam before entering Brazosport College, unless qualified based on an exemption or waiver. Students enrolled in certificate programs are exempt from the TSIA2 exam.
In order to assist students with becoming college-ready, Brazosport College offers PSYC 1300 - Learning Framework. This course is designed to equip students with the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to be active and successful learners. Some of the topics covered in this course include: 1) goal-setting, 2) effective time management, 3) handling stress, 4) note-taking, 5) active reading, 6) test-taking strategies, and 7) conducting research.
For more information on this course, please contact the Transitional Studies Department at 979-230-3184.
Exemptions from the TSIA2 exam may apply to students who meet specific criteria as designated in the TSIA2 regulations. Consult the Office of Admissions or the Counseling and Testing Office for details on TSIA2 exemptions.
Brochures about TSIA2 testing are available at the counter of the Registrar’s Office and in the Counseling and Testing Office.
For more information on college placement tests or to arrange for testing, contact the Brazosport College Counseling and Testing Office at 979-230-3000.
