Licensed Vocational Nursing (L.V.N.)

Application to the Licensed Vocational Nursing Program is a two-step process.

Step 1. Applicants must complete and satisfy all Brazosport College application and admission requirements, including submission of original transcripts from all previous colleges, nursing programs, and high schools. TSI testing is recommended and should be completed soon after application for college admission. Prerequisite courses and nursing courses require college level reading skills. Applicants are encouraged to carefully review the college catalog and program information materials.  Applicants are responsible for submitting all application materials by the published deadline.

Step 2. To apply to the LVN Program, a separate application is required. The LVN Program Application is available June 1-July 31.

Consideration for admission into the LVN program is competitive and includes (2) major requirements:

  • Complete the HESI Admission Assessment (HESI A2) AND the HESI Critical Thinking Exam during the yearly application cycle (June 1 - July 31).
    • The HESI exams are scheduled and administered through the Brazosport College Testing Center
    • The HESI A2 exam includes the following content areas: Reading Comprehension, Grammar, Vocabulary and Knowledge, Anatomy and Physiology, and Math. HESI preparation and study materials are available in the BC library, for purchase in the college bookstore, and from other sources.
    • The Brazosport College LVN Program does not utilize a definitive cutoff score for HESI exams, rather all applicants are ranked against one another. Students with higher overall HESI scores will be selected for admission into the LVN Program.
  • Complete the prerequisite course(s) with a letter grade of C or better.
    • Prerequisite course(s) must be completed prior to the start of the Licensed Vocational Nurse courses, which begin the January following the application window.
    • Applicants are solely accountable for ensuring a transcript(s) demonstrating successful completion of the prerequisite course(s) has been received no later than January 5th of the year LVN courses begin.
    • Prerequisite course(s) options:

Applicants selected for program admission are provided with a conditional acceptance until the following requirements are met:

  • Two “clear” background checks are required as a condition of full acceptance into the BC nursing program and before you may attend a clinical course: (1) a DPS/FBI background check conducted by the Texas Board of Nursing (BON); and (2) an additional background check conducted through Viewpoint Screening.
    • Instructions on how to obtain these required background checks are provided in the conditional acceptance letter emailed to selected applicants.
      • A “clear” background check obtained from the Texas Board of Nursing is demonstrated by receiving a “Blue card” or a “positive” Outcome Letter.
      • A “clear” background check obtained via Viewpoint Screening is demonstrated by results revealing no convictions of a crime other than a misdemeanor driving violation in the past seven (7) years.
  • Provide documentation indicating that all clinical requirements have been met (immunizations, drug screens, CPR, etc.)

Generally, LVN nursing students are in class every Monday-Friday. Clinical (hospital-based) course schedules include: early morning start times (0600), weekends, nights, afternoons, holidays, and as required, to meet program and course objectives. Clinical sites are throughout Brazoria and Matagorda Counties and reliable transportation is vital. LVN courses require a significant amount of out-of-class time preparation and must be completed in sequence, therefore working while attending the LVN Program is not recommended.

A personal laptop/tablet, computer literacy, and reliable internet access are essential.

There are additional nursing program and college fees as described in the college catalog. Fees, tuition, and unforeseen costs are subject to change.
