Honors Program

The Honors Program serves our highly-motivated and intellectually and creatively talented students. Honors classes challenge students to develop their full potential.

Student participation in the Honors Program offers:

• Honors designation on transcripts
• Scholarship opportunities
• Travel prospects
• Smaller class sizes
• Closer interaction with faculty
• Student directed learning environment
• Stimulation of highly motivated, creative learning communities

In addition to enriched experiences within honors classes, students in the Honors Program may attend and participate in national and local conferences, lead through the Student Honors Enrichment Council, organize colloquia at Brazosport College, and hold student debates.

Students can earn honors credit either through contracts or special honors courses within the Honors Program. Contracts are available in a wide variety of courses. Honors contracts elevate a regular course to the honors level by expanding content complexity. Students can also earn honors credit by enrolling in a separate honors section. In these smaller honors classes, instructors adopt a student-directed learning environment, which challenges students to arrive at a more complex understanding of the material and to develop leadership and communication skills beyond those expected in regular classes.

Each honors course successfully completed is noted on the transcript as an honors course. Students who graduate with at least 12 honors credits will be designated as Vice President’s Scholars, those with at least 18 honors credits will be designated as President’s Scholars, and those with at least 24 honors credits will be designated as Regents’ Scholars.

Dean’s List

At the end of each semester, Brazosport College compiles a list of students who have earned scholastic recognition by being named to the Dean’s List. To achieve this recognition students must complete at least 12 semester hours of college-level work, pass all their courses, and earn a grade point average of 3.60.

Students who carry more than 8 but less than 12 semester hours of college-level work may receive this recognition by earning a grade point average of 3.75 and passing all of their courses.

Distinguished Student Award

Distinguished students are recognized not only for their academic achievement but also for participation, leadership in student activities, and for good citizenship.

Distinguished students must have a 3.25 cumulative grade point average based on at least 24 hours of college-level work, must have met all TSI requirements, must be enrolled for at least six hours in the spring semester, and must be nominated for this award by college faculty and staff. A standing committee makes a final selection of up to 20 students who are honored at an awards ceremony in late spring.

Cum Laude Graduate Recognition

Students who earn a degree with a grade point average above 3.90 on all hours taken at Brazosport College will be acknowledged by “Summa Cum Laude” on the transcript.

Students who earn a degree with a grade point average of 3.75 through 3.90 on all hours taken at Brazosport College will be acknowledged by “Magna Cum Laude” on the transcript.

Students who earn a degree with a grade point average of 3.50 through 3.74 on all hours taken at Brazosport College will be acknowledged by “Cum Laude” on the transcript.
