Machine Technology: Machinist Specialty

If you enjoy precision work and problem-solving, then consider a career as a machinist or millwright. Local industry offers ongoing career opportunities for trained, mechanically inclined and skilled applicants. A machinist produces precision metal parts and a millwright or industrial mechanic maintains and installs machinery and heavy equipment used in many industries. These skilled professionals typically work in machine shops, manufacturing facilities and at construction sites.

Brazosport College’s classes offer hands-on training - taught by experienced faculty. An added benefit is the co-op classes that provide valuable on-the job training while you earn a paycheck.  Machinist jobs can range from making small parts for car engines to creating gigantic parts for airplanes. They also monitor equipment, replace worn out parts, check the accuracy of parts being produced, and perform maintenance work - repairing or making new parts for existing machinery. Technological advances have brought in machines that cut with lasers, water jets and electrified wires.

Brazosport College offers a two-year degree, a basic certificate and an advanced certificate. Former students have been successful at refineries and manufacturing sites as maintenance mechanics, millwrights, industrial mechanics and industrial mechanical technicians.
