Licensed Vocational Nursing (L.V.N.)

Vocational Nursing

Application to the Vocational Nursing Program is a two-step process.

  1. Applicants must complete and satisfy all Brazosport College application and admission requirements, including submission of original transcripts from all previous colleges, nursing programs, and high schools. TSI testing is recommended and should be completed soon after application for college admission. Prerequisite courses and nursing courses require college level reading skills. Applicants are encouraged to carefully review all college catalog and program information materials.  Applicants are responsible for submitting all application materials by the published deadline.
  2. An additional, separate application is required for the LVN program. Consideration for LVN program admission is competitive. Assessment of applicant readiness for the nursing curriculum is based on prerequisite course grades and TEAS (entrance assessment) outcome indicators, and additional attributes indicating applicant has planned for and demonstrates understanding of program intensity. The deadline for submission of all completed application materials is July 30. Nursing classes for admitted students begin in the Spring semester. Applicants are solely accountable for submitting application materials by the deadline.

Applicants complete the Test of Essential Academic Skills (TEAS) entrance assessment during the yearly application cycle (generally May - September). TEAS is scheduled and administered through the Brazosport College Testing Center. TEAS preparation and study materials are available in the library, for purchase in the college bookstore, and from other sources. Applicants submitting completed application packets, successfully completing the prerequisite courses, and with TEAS scores indicating readiness for LVN study, are considered for interview. Applicants must successfully complete the Anatomy and Physiology requirement prior to completing their applications for admission to the program. The Anatomy and Physiology requirement is satisfied by BIOL 2301 /BIOL 2101  (Anatomy & Physiology I/Lab) and BIOL 2302 /BIOL 2102  (Anatomy & Physiology II/Lab) or by completing VNSG 1320  (A&P Allied Health).

Successful completion of the nursing curriculum does not guarantee success on the NCLEX-PN licensure exam. Nursing students must adhere to all nursing program policies and procedures to progress in the program. Nursing students should plan and prepare long before seeking admission. Planning must include financial, personal, academic, and back up plans. Working during school is not possible. LNV nursing courses must be completed in sequence. Clinical experience schedules include: early morning, weekends, nights, afternoons, holidays, and as required to meet program and course objectives. Clinical sites are throughout Brazoria County and reliable transportation is vital.

Applicants selected for program admission must complete the FBI Criminal Background Screening exactly as instructed by written nursing program policy and procedure. Applicants must submit results of completed FBI Criminal Background Screening, declaratory orders, and any board of nursing communication specific to eligibility. There are additional nursing program and college fees as described in the college catalog. Fees, tuition, and unforeseen costs are subject to change. Computer literacy and reliable internet access are essential.
